The Daily Double a.k.a. The Bird Nest Experience

CONSTANCE: Our pizza and wing adventure usually starts earlier in the week as we work for the weekend. This week, Mathias met the former owner of the Sports Page and that lead to a hankering to relive his BC (Before Constance) days in the 80s when he's gone there to watch football and devour pizza and wings (the guilt-free all you can eat wings days of a 20-something!!). Like most of our selections, we'd driven past their location too many times to count and usually remarked something like, "we should go there sometime". So that sometime was Friday night.

Our evening began on the hammock with the schnauzers in the backyard. Just rehashing the week and then I noticed that the schnauzers seemed more fascinated with something other than me. Kody and Kringles are both like my shadows, so I grew instantly suspicious. They were both acting guilty when I called to them too. Kringles is so pure and innocent (we rescued him from a puppy mill where he lived for 2+ years as a stud dog through Because You Care) and he instantly ran over with a dead bird in his mouth. Ah ha! That would explain the little bird feathers I'd been seeing in the house the past couple of days. Here I'd thought that one of the pillows was leaking. And another ah ha moment - he had licked me on the lips just last night. Eewwww ... gross! I felt like Lucy being kissed by Snoopy in Peanuts, but they never showed a dead Woodstock in Snoopy's mouth - I definitely had it worse!!

So you might be asking how does this relate to the pizza and wings? When Mathias called to ask about any specials, we were pleasantly surprised by the Daily Double ongoing special. A large pepperoni za and 15 wings. Not the all you can eat Mathias glory days, but enough for us two. $15 - good deal!

We went in and the new owners had different decor that the 80s, but Mathias said it still had the same aura about the place. The bar patrons welcomed us and the "Norm" of the bar, was filling us in on the new owners, and how good the pizza and wings were going to be, the new decor, etc. The couple minutes we had to wait went very quickly.

Being so close we got home to steamy hot pizza and wings ... and you'll see from the micro photo, the pepperoni looked like it was all nested in there - like a bird nest! This was a positive spin on the earlier bird breath dog kiss I'd received.

Check out the photos - the za was delicious. Mathias said the best crust this year. Crunchy and square - he got all four corners! And the wing flavor we'd selected was Cajun. It was more of a hot versus Louisiana Licker-kind of flavor, but crispy, flavorful and sinus-clearing and in allergy season, this is a good thing!

I'd say they're one of Erie's best kept pizza and wing secrets - kinda under the radar, but very worthy of a 7 out of 8 slice review.

Remember to ask for the Daily Double and you'll surely enjoy the bird nest pepperoni as much as we did!
